What is GAPKI?

The Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI) was established on 27 February 1981. The establishment was driven by the intention of Indonesian palm oil industry players to unite themselves in one organization amid the increase of their number operating in the country. Initially, it only grouped 23 palm oil companies, consisting of state-owned plantation companies (BUMN), private foreign and national companies, and oil palm farmers grouped in cooperatives.

• Acting as partners of the central government and regional governments across the country in formulating conducive policies for sustainability of palm oil industries.
• Encouraging member companies to implement the good and sustainable governance of palm oil industries.
• Developing Indonesia’s palm oil industries with a view to increasing competitiveness at the global market.

GAPKI Aims:

  1. To foster and develop the capacities, activities and interests of Indonesia’s palm oil industry players, and combine them in a balanced relationship.
  2. Help create conducive condition for palm oil industries to grow.
  3. Help increase the capacity of member companies to realize sustainable palm oil industry.
  4. Facilitate and provide advocacy in resolving problems facing the palm oil industries.
  5. Developing synergy with the central government and regional governments in formulating policies related to the palm oil industries.

Most of Indonesian people, around 48-49% (2023), live in villages and in need of welfare improvement. The largest workforce reside and work in villages and agricultural areas.

Palm oil is the top export commodity of Indonesia. In 2022, its palm oil export value reached US$39.28 billion, which surpassed its export value of oil and gas sector at US$1.38 billion and far exceeding the exports of other top plantation commodities, namely rubber, cocoa, coffee, sugar and tea.

The Indonesia’s palm oil export value of US$39.28 billion in 2022 was higher than that in the previous year at US$35.5 billion.

Indonesia’s top ten destinations of palm oil exports are China, India, USA, Pakistan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Bangladesh, Egypt, Russia and Italy.

Palm oil contributes Rp300 trillion in  foreign exchange to the state

Indonesia’s palm oil industry reached a new record in contributing foreign exchange. In 2022, the strategic palm oil industries contributed US$39.07 billion or more than Rp600 trillion in foreign exchange. The new record of achievement has strengthened the position of palm oil industries as the largest contributor of foreign exchange for Indonesian economy.

Looking Forward

New paradigm of palm oil as important commodity for improving the welfare of smallholders and achieving SDGs, especially for consuming countries.
